Shoe size conversion all shoe size charts faverie

If you are like me, you love shoes in many different styles. Yet, you may find it frustrating to try to buy your size at retailers worldwide. After you read this post, you’ll master the art of shoe size conversion between many shoe size systems. This allows you to buy marvelous shoes at retailers around the world. In addition to purchasing beautiful shoes, you may also be able to save money by buying shoes in countries where they are cheaper.

Before we start comparing shoe size charts, however, you must know how to measure your foot accurately, and I have included that information in this post too. Your foot size changes throughout your life, so be sure to measure often.

In addition to buying fabulous shoes for yourself, you can also use the information in this post to purchase shoes for the opposite sex and little ones. I have included information for men, women, and children in this post.

Doesn’t it sound interesting?

Let’s get started!

Introduction to shoe sizing

Do you love having a closetful of beautiful shoes? The average American woman owns more than 19 pairs of shoes, but about 15% own more than 30 pairs. It is the same way in many other developed countries.

If you shop on the internet for shoes, you may notice that there are different shoe sizing systems. You may also wonder what size your feet are as they may change slightly over your lifetime. Keep reading to learn about the different methods and how to determine your shoe size accurately.

What is shoe size?

Your shoe size describes the length of your foot. It may also tell the width of your foot, although many shoes come only in standard or standard-and-wide widths. Therefore, you must measure your foot accurately to find shoes that fit correctly.

Measuring foot length meter

When modernization started allowing shoes to be mass-produced, people had to develop a way to measure feet accurately. While people often give King Edward II credit for creating the first shoe sizing system, that may not be the case. According to historian Randle Holme, the first shoe sizing system was not developed until long after King Edward II died, who wrote The Academy of Armory and Blazon in 1688. He claims that a group of shoe merchants devised the system. They agreed that in adult shoes, that 8 in. was a standardized starting point and that each 0.25 in. after that would constitute a new size.

Londoner Robert Gardiner wrote his book The Illustrated Handbook of the Foot in 1856, and it changed the system from 0.25 in. to 0.33 in. New Yorker Edwin Simpson defined the system further to include widths and other features so that shoemakers could order the parts they needed to get shoes and be assured that they were getting the correct size. Soon, the Retail Boot & Shoe Dealers’ National Association adopted the system in the United States, and it was adopted in Britain shortly afterward.

Nonetheless, many shoe manufacturers did not adhere closely to the system. Furthermore, shoemakers in other countries developed their unique method for measuring feet. It does not matter if you measure your feet in in. or cm.; you must accurately measure because there is little room for error and your shoe size depends on your ability to measure correctly.

Types of shoe sizes

There are at least four shoe sizing systems commonly used across the world. Therefore, if you order a pair of shoes, you must know which method the manufacturer is using. If you do not know, it is straightforward to order the wrong shoes.

US Shoe Size System (the US and Canada)

Edwin Simpson developed the first shoe chart used in the United States. It took the national shoemakers’ organization about seven years to adopt Simpson’s system. During the American Civil War, he created the system, which was also the first time that shoes were made differently for left and right feet.

When men joined the army, they were assigned a dog tag and a shoe size. This allowed the government to order boots and be assured that they would fit the soldier regardless of his location. The government, however, did not start buying left and right shoes for about another 50 years.

The United States Congress passed a law during the Civil War approving Simpson’s system, but manufacturers have never been penalized for not sticking to it. Therefore, shoe sizes in the United States are not uniform.

Each manufacturer requires that each of their men’s shoe sizes is 0.33 in. longer than the previous size. Furthermore, women’s shoe sizes are 1.5 sizes smaller than men’s shoes. Therefore, if you wear a size eight men’s shoe, you will wear a size 12 women’s shoe.

Note that the United States shoe sizing system is used in Australia for women’s shoes. This makes them two sizes smaller than the United Kingdom shoe sizing system.

UK Shoe Size System

Detail man shoe buying

There are at least two theories on how shoe manufacturers in the United Kingdom came up with their measuring system. Some believe that early shoe manufacturers used the width across the knuckles of their closed fist, which is about 4 in., and the span of their hand, which is about 9 in., to create the system.

Others insist that the system is based on barleycorn, which was an early way to measure many things. When the kernels were placed end-to-end, there were three barley kernels in the inch. Eventually, a foot ruler was developed, starting with 0, with the first mark being at 4 in. While shoes initially started with a size 0 and went up to size 20, with each size being 0.33 in. bigger than the one before it, the United Kingdom system now has children’s and adult sizes separated.

This system is used in many countries, including Ireland, India, Pakistan, and South Africa. Therefore, you can order shoes from many different places when you know your United Kingdom shoe size.

EU Shoe Size System

Often called the Continental Shoe System, this system is used in Continental European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and Switzerland. Each shoe size is 0.66 cm. shorter than under the United Kingdom system. This measurement is called two Paris points, but no one is sure who invented the name of the system.

Therefore, under the United Kingdom system, you figure your shoe size by 3⁄2 × foot length (cm) + 2. While I am sure that some of you can do that math in your head, I have never been fantastic at maths. Therefore, later in this post, I will make it easy for you by including a shoe conversion chart.

Australia uses this identical shoe sizing for boys, girls, and men, and they use a different system to figure out the size of a woman’s shoe. In most cases, you will need to take your United Kingdom shoe size and add one or two sizes.

If you fall in love with a shoe with United Kingdom sizing, but you only know your United States size, then you can easily add two to the number and get the correct answer. Alternatively, you can use the shoe conversion chart listed later in this post.

Mondopoint

Mondopoint is the primary shoe sizing system in many countries, including the Soviet Union, Russia, East Germany, China, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. In addition to the nations, it is the official system used by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Furthermore, the system is often used by ski boot manufacturers worldwide.

You will often see shoe sizes listed as 280/110. The first number indicates the length of the foot in mm. from the tip of the longest toe to the end of the heel. The second number indicates the width of the foot in mm.

You will sometimes see this size listed as 28/110. This is the measurement of the foot in centimeters. This system was created by the International Organization for Standardization in 1970.

Many consider this the most straightforward system to use, while others find it frustrating. It is usually best to go with the length of your foot instead of the width of this shoe chart gives you two different answers.

Note that while the system is the same, shoes from Japanese shoe companies will only list the cm. size and not the mm size.

Mexico Shoe Size System

Sitting girl high heeled shoes

Like the Mondopoint system, Mexican shoe sizes are based on cm. From 22 to 24 cm., the ones and tenths are the only numbers used to determine the size. Therefore, a shoe that is 22 cm. long is a size two, and a shoe that is 23.5 centimeters long is a 3.5.

The system changes when shoes measure longer than 25.5 cms. For these shoes, it is essential to use an online calculator.

Note that men’s and women’s shoes are the same size in Mexico. Further, finding larger size shoes in stores in Mexico can be very challenging. Therefore, if you are planning a trip to this country and have larger feet, be sure to pack along an extra pair or two of shoes. You do not want something happening and not find shoes to fit you.

While it is vital to order the right size, you need to know what type of shoe you want to order before you get to that point. Look at our Types of Shoes blog post to get an idea of the fabulous types of shoes found worldwide. I fell in love with many different styles from this informative post, and I am sure that you will too.

You will not want to quit reading now. In the next chapter, I am covering tips on measuring your foot. I am also covering tips on how different types of shoes should fit. As promised, the third part of this chart will make it easy to convert other shoe size systems, so be sure to keep reading.

How to measure shoe size

In the previous chapter, I shared with you many of the shoe sizing systems used worldwide. I told you in what countries used many of the systems. I hope you took some time to read the blog post about types of shoes too.

While knowing this information will help you order even more beautiful shoes to add to your collection, you need to measure your feet before you begin accurately. We will finish this chapter by looking at how different shoes should fit.

Shoe sizing tips

Measuring your feet is key to getting shoes that fit. You can easily convert between the different shoe sizing systems when you know this measurement. You must measure your feet accurately and regularly.

by FootDocDana

Get Some Key Materials

The first thing you should do is get some essential materials. You will need a stiff piece of paper. Using a lighter weight option will bend under the pressure of your foot. Therefore, you cannot trace around it accurately. The cardboard should be big enough to draw around both feet on one piece, or you will need two pieces.

Secondly, you need a pen or pencil to draw around your foot. Use something that has a narrow point so that you can trace around your foot precisely. It helps if you choose an option that you can wash off your foot because you will be tracing very near it.

The third thing that you will need is a ruler. You can choose one with in. or cm. Try to find an option with a marked starting point because they measure more accurately.

It is nearly impossible to trace around your own foot precisely. Therefore, you need to recruit a friend to help you. Sending this post to a friend so they understand the importance of measuring their own feet can help you get someone to help you measure your feet.

Trace Your foot

Stand up straight with your feet square underneath you. Slide the stiff paper or cardboard under your foot. Concentrate on standing up straight.

Man suit tying shoe workshop

This is why you need a friend to trace around your foot because you cannot put the usual amount of pressure on your foot while bending over to trace around it. Therefore, your friend will need to trace your foot for you. Your job is to keep standing upright. It is easier if you pick out a spot on the wall in front of you and stare at it while your friend is doing the tracing.

Measure the Drawing

Use a ruler to measure the drawing. You should measure the length and width of your foot. Be sure to measure from the top of your longest toe to the back of your heel. Write the figure down. Then, measure the width at its widest point. Again, write the figure down. Do the measurements again to make sure that you measured accurately.

Repeat the Process

Now have the friend trace around your other foot. Again, make sure that you are standing up straight. If you are not, the tracing may be too big or tiny. Your friend must trace around your foot accurately.

Then, measure the drawing using a ruler. Write down your answer. Ensure that your answer is accurate by measuring twice. Most people’s feet will not measure precisely the same. Record the answers to your largest foot on a piece of paper that you can keep in a safe place.

If there is a significant difference between the sizes of your two feet, then consider hooking up with a service that trades shoes. One such organization is National Odd Shoe Exchange. Some department stores also offer this option.

If your feet are about the same size, then record the size of your largest foot on a piece of paper and put it in a safe place.

Pro tip: Measure at night

If you are like most people, you are up and busy during the day. Therefore, it is natural for your blood and other bodily fluids to settle in your feet. Measuring your feet at night ensures that your shoes fit your feet when they are at their biggest.

As with all things, there can be exceptions. For instance, if you work the night shift, you will want to measure right before you go to bed in the morning. Your feet are likely to be at their biggest at that point of the day.

Feet insole measuring size

Pro tip: measure your feet every year

Your feet are unlikely to stay the same size throughout your adult life. Your feet are likely not to stop growing until you are in your early 20s.

Secondly, your feet may change sizes if you become pregnant. They may go back down to the previous size shortly after you give birth, or they may stay a bigger size the rest of your life.

Once you get older, then your feet may change again. Degeneration of ligaments often makes feet get wider and flatter. Arthritis and other diseases can also change the size of your feet. Of course, injuries to your feet can change their size temporarily or permanently.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Insole length does not determine shoe size

A large retailer measured the insole on 20 different running shoes that were supposed to be the same size. They found they ranged in length from 271 to 287 mm. This 16 mm. discrepancy comes from how the shoe’s toe box is constructed. Therefore, do not use the length of your favorite pair of shoes’ insoles as an accurate way to buy your next pair of shoes.

While they studied tennis shoes, the same is true of other types of shoes. Therefore, make sure to measure your foot regularly.

How should your shoes fit?

Different styles of shoes should fit your foot differently. There is no truth to the old saying that a shoe will fit your foot better after you have worn it for a little while. Shoes should be comfortable and provide good support for your feet from the second you put them on.

Sport-specific

If you participate in a particular sport more than a couple of times a week, you need shoes made for that sport. Consider these options:

  • Running shoes – Look for options that help move your foot forward naturally and have plenty of cushioning.
  • Walking shoes – Look for extra shock absorption, especially in the heel and the ball of your foot.
  • Tennis shoes – Choose an option with a flexible sole that allows you to move to the side easily.
  • Trail runners – Look for options that have good support in the heel and the sides.
  • Basketball shoes – Look for high-top options that fit snugly around your ankles.
  • Soccer cleats – These shoes should fit tightly all over your feet, and they should not have a toe spike.
  • Lacrosse shoes – Choose a high-top option that provides good ankle support and an option that has a front toe spike to help with stability.
  • Football shoes – Consider the requirements of your position and choose a shoe that accomplishes that task. For example, linemen need high-top options with good ankle support.
  • Baseball and softball cleats – Look for options with good arch support that fits under the arch of your foot properly.
  • Golf shoes – Pick options with short cleats to help you walk easier.
  • Cycling shoes – These shoes often have a stiff sole to better support your foot on the pedals.

Athletic shoes

You need to consider at least three factors when buying athletic shoes to ensure that they fit your feet properly.

With your foot pushed as far back in the shoe as you can get it, there should be at least the width of your thumbnail between the end of your longest toe and the end of the shoe. It is vital to get someone to help you because you need to stand up straight and bear weight on your feet. If your shoes are not long enough, you may have trouble with your toes, such as developing ingrown toenails and hammertoes. You can also develop corns and blisters.

The second consideration is if the athletic shoe is wide enough for your foot. Your foot should fit directly over the shoe’s arch. It should not spill out to the side of it. If it does, you need a wider shoe or a bigger size. If your shoe is not wide enough or too wide, you can develop blisters and bunions. Wearing shoes that are not the right width can lead to pinched nerves.

The final primary consideration is the shoe’s height. Your foot should easily slide into the shoe without putting too much pressure on the top of your foot. Heel blisters are a common problem if the shoe’s height is not suitable for your foot.

Boots

You need to consider at least four areas when deciding if a new pair of boots fit your foot correctly. The boot should naturally flex along the line where your toes join your foot. If it does not, it will rub against your foot and make it raw.

The boot should be the correct width for your foot. Your foot should feel cradled, not pinched. While it is true that your boots will stretch a little as you wear them, the amount of stretch is usually only about 1 mm.

Be sure to consider your foot’s arch and the boot’s arch. They should match. Your foot should naturally fit over the arch support without hurting. If it feels like it is falling over the arch, change sizes. You will not wear a boot where the arch does not fit properly on your foot, so leave them for others to wear.

Finally, you need to make sure that there is enough room in the toe box for your toes to fit comfortably. If they feel squished, you are setting yourself up for corns, blisters, pinched nerves, and other problems.

High Heels

Woman red dress high heels

Choosing the right high heels size can be challenging because many are open-toed, allowing different sizes to wear identical shoes. If your feet slide too much or you feel pain when trying them on, do not buy them. There are plenty of options on the market that you can wear comfortably, so never wear painful shoes.

If you try them for a little while and discover that you are getting blisters, pass those shoes on to someone else. Your toes should not overhang the end of the shoe when you are walking. Likewise, your heel should not slip. If the straps cut into your feet, the shoes do not have enough volume for your foot. If you do not have a friend who wants the shoes, consider donating them to a charity.

Manufacturers make over 20 billion pairs of shoes annually. Therefore, there are many different choices. Now, you know how to measure your foot to ensure you are buying the right size. I have also given you tips for how different types of footwear should fit. In the next chapter, I will show you many shoe conversion charts.

International shoe size conversion

In this chapter, I will be providing you with numerous shoe conversion charts. These charts will allow you to shop for fabulous shoes at reasonable prices from retailers worldwide. We will look at men’s, women’s and children’s shoes so that you can shop for every member of your family.

While there are many different shoe sizing systems, quickly converting gives you many outstanding options. This chapter is beneficial since many shoe companies ship worldwide but only list sizes for their home country. Using shoe-conversion charts allows you to shop no matter the merchant’s location easily.

International shoes size conversion charts

It would be easy to buy shoes worldwide if all manufacturers used the same sizing system. That is not the case. Therefore, after measuring your foot accurately using the directions included in the last chapter, use these charts to help you convert your foot size into different shoe sizes.

Euro to US shoe size conversion

The Euro system is used in most continental European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. It is also used in many Middle Eastern countries, including Iran. Using this system, you can easily find shoe sizes in Brazil and Hong Kong. Just remember to subtract two sizes from your answer.

The Continental European shoe size system is sometimes called the Paris Pointe system. Meanwhile, in Germany, it is often called the stitch size. We will be covering men’s, women’s, and children’s shoe sizes so that you can shop for everyone on your list.

Regardless of where you live, ordering shoes from China can be a great idea if you are a budget-conscious shopper. You can often find terrific bargains. Alternatively, consider luxurious shoe options. If you are a consumer in China, you can often set a fashion trend by ordering shoes from the United States. This chart allows you to convert between the two systems easily. It is smaller than some charts because people’s feet in China are more likely to be the same size than those in America.

Mexico to US shoe size conversion

Shoe size numbers for infants and children in Mexico are about nine numbers bigger than the U.S. size. Therefore, you can convert between the two in your head in a pinch and get close. With a few exceptions, you will not find half sizes in Mexico. If you or another adult wants to buy shoes numbered in Mexico, then starting with your U.S. shoe size and adding 19 will give you a very close approximation.

Alternatively, you can use this chart to provide you with an even better answer. Therefore, if you are a resident of Mexico, you can buy shoes when working or traveling to the United States. Likewise, if you are a United States resident, you can purchase shoes while on vacation or working in Mexico. You can also order shoes from the other country.

Shoe sizes in Japan are close to the measurement of your foot in centimeters. Therefore, if you forget to look, you can start there if you are buying shoes with a Japanese shoe size in a store. While there is no distinction in the numbering system between boys and girls, men’s shoes are about a half size bigger than women’s shoes. If you want to buy shoes using the U.S. shoe measuring system, be sure to use this chart.

For the most part, adult shoe sizes in Korea are in mm. Korean residents generally have smaller feet, so finding large sizes in stores can be challenging. Therefore, you may want to order online from the United States. This chart that lists children’s, men’s, and women’s sizes can help you quickly find the correct size after you measure your feet. It starts with cm. and in. so that you can use the most familiar system.

Mondopoint to US shoe size conversion

The International Organization for Standardization developed the Mondopoint system in the 1970s as the international standard for feet measurement. The organization hoped to eliminate confusion about shoe sizes by making them Univeral. It is most commonly used to measure ski boots around the world.

Mondo means world, so the name of this system is very fitting. You can easily take your foot measurements and find your size on this chart. Many manufacturers do not offer a half system, but you can use boot liners to help your boots fit better. There are also no men’s or women’s shoe sizes under this system based on your foot’s length in millimeters.

Mondopoint to US shoe size coversion chart

You now know how to convert into US shoe sizing systems from multiple systems worldwide. Additionally, you can look up your US size and know what sizes to buy in various countries. In the next chapter, we will examine how to convert between men’s and women’s shoe sizes in the United States. Therefore, you will want to keep reading.

Men-to-women shoe size conversion

In the last chapter, I have covered how to buy shoes worldwide. Yet, you may be wondering if you fall in love with a pair of shoes designed for the opposite sex, should you buy them. In this chapter, you will learn why that is not always a great idea. Then, I will cover how to convert men’s shoes into women’s sizes and vice versa because there may be times in your life that you might want to go forward anyway.

The importance of a men-to-women shoe size chart

You may already know a lot about the differences between men and women, but did you know that their shoes are made differently for a reason?

On average, if a man and a woman are the same height, the woman is likely to weigh less. Therefore, shoe manufacturers often use lighter-weight materials in women’s shoes than in men’s shoes. Additionally, women’s shoes usually have a little extra wiggle room in the toes, and the heel may also offer more support in the woman’s shoe.

Feet men women laces tied

If you put a man’s foot next to a woman’s foot of the same length, the man’s foot on average will be wider than the woman’s foot. Yet, if you put two shoes of the same length next to each other, you will discover that most men’s shoes are the same width as women’s, but the extra room in the toe box on women’s shoes makes them feel bigger.

I am sharing a table in a moment to explain this point further. When there is a difference in the width, it is minimal.

Men-to-women shoe size conversion chart

The difference in how a man and a woman strike the ground when walking is called the Q-angle. When this angle becomes too large, you are likely to feel pain in your hips and knees when walking. The Q-angle is different in men and women.

As mentioned earlier, men’s and women’s feet are different in width. Let’s take a look at the average width of men’s and women’s shoes for different shoe sizes in the U.S. Men’s shoes will fit a bit looser than women’s shoes in some cases, but there is not a lot of difference. Remember that women’s shoes often have larger toe boxes, so it depends on where you need the extra room.

How to convert women’s shoe size to men’s?

If you line up U.S. men’s shoes on one side of a line and U.S. women’s shoes on the other side by size and add to find the difference, you would find that you need to add 1.5 to each man’s shoe size to get the same woman’s size. That means that a woman’s size 10 will fit a guy that usually wears a size 8.5. Likewise, a lady who usually wears a size 8.5 will wear a man’s 7. If math is not your thing, then use this easy conversion chart.

In the last chapter, we will examine shoes for every member of your family. Then, we will take an even deeper look at shoe widths. You will not want to miss these charts, so be sure to keep reading. They are packed with useful information that you may even want to put away in a file somewhere so that you can access it the next time you shop for shoes.

Shoe size chart

In this post, I have covered lots of helpful information to assist you in converting your shoe size to different shoe size systems. This allows you to easily shop while on vacation or order from fantastic shoe sellers worldwide. Think of the shoe collection you can build when you can shop with many different merchants and the money you can save. You can also find shoes that others swear they cannot find the hottest fad.

I have also covered how to measure your foot accurately. This chapter is the last one, and it will put the information presented together in a way that you may find extremely useful. Therefore, you will want to make sure to keep reading.

Female model city looking heels.

I remember when I was a teen that a certain style of shoe was so important to me. My parents thought I was silly because the manufacturer was getting double the price for this particular model. My parents refused to buy me the shoes, but they encouraged me to save up to buy them for myself. They even gave me some easy tasks that I could do to earn some extra cash. By the time that I actually earned the cash, the shoe was no longer in fashion. I was able to spend the money that I earned on other things, so it was a win for everyone. I wish I had the option of shopping at different places worldwide so that I could have gotten the shoes sooner.

Generic shoe size chart

I have already shown you how to convert into U.S. sizes from systems worldwide, but if you have followed my advice to measure your foot regularly and wonder what your shoe size is in the United States, then use this handy chart. Keep in mind that different shoe companies often have their sizing system, which can vary a little. If you are between sizes, it is usually best to order the larger size. Shoe manufacturers choose the last that best fits the purpose of the shoe. Then, they build the shoe around the last. Therefore, it is natural for shoes for different purposes to be slightly different in sizes.

Keep in mind that shoe sizes differ slightly by model. This is caused by many different things. All shoes are built around lasts, and their size varies slightly by brand. Additionally, shoes made from stiff materials, like leather, will usually feel smaller than those that are made from softer materials.

Use this table as a general guide because each shoe will be different. Reading reviews can often help you identify if people think the shoe runs large, small or average. You can also use this guide as a starting point to see if your foot measurements are in the right ballpark, or if you need to measure again.

Kids shoe size chart

Kid puts shoes

Buying shoes for children can be tricky because their feet often grow quickly. Therefore, you need to measure their foot regularly. When you know their shoe size, you can usually grab shoes when you find them on sale, even if you snuck away without them. Doing this can be a great way to save money. Most children start wearing kids’ shoe sizes about when they are four.

For girls, there is a time that they can wear bit girl and ladies’ shoes, which gives them even more choices. The same applies to boys so they can find lots of wonderful options. If you are shopping in another country, the breaking point between children’s shoes and adult shoes may be different. Always go by the foot size.

Baby’s shoe size chart

Baby shoes can be an excellent way to keep your baby’s feet warm before they even start to walk. These shoes should be very soft and flexible. Since babies grow so quickly, be sure to buy them big enough to allow some growing room.

Once your baby is big enough to start walking, choose shoes that have a flexible sole. Avoid any shoe with a high arch unless your baby’s doctor recommends it because most toddlers have flat feet. Use this chart to help you buy the right size of baby shoes.

Many doctors caution against small children wearing shoes all the time. They say that the nerve tips in your child’s foot may not be fully developed, and therefore, they may not feel pain until the trouble has already started. Additionally, their communication skills have not developed enough to let you know what is hurting in some cases. Therefore, they may feel pain in their feet but cannot tell you that their shoe is hurting their foot.

Do not become frustrated if your baby refuses to keep their shoes on. It is a natural part of babyhood to want to take shoes off. Some people never outgrow this habit and shed their shoes as soon as possible when they get home at night. I must confess that I am one of those people.

Shoe Width Chart

Shoes come in many widths. If a shoe is unmarked, then it is an average width. Shoe widths in the United States start at slim, which may also be referred to as 3A or 4A. They continue through 19E. As the shoe gets bigger, so does its width. Use this chart to see the different codes used to indicate shoe widths.

Shoe width varies by fractions of an in. or cm. If a shoe does not feel right, consider buying a wider option. Like foot length, your shoe width varies throughout your life. It is usual for your feet to get a little wider as you age as gravity pushes your body downward. Other people have wide feet from the day they are born. If a parent had wide feet, you are more likely to have wide feet. You may have experienced injuries or gotten certain diseases making your feet wider. Many women find that their foot gets wider when they are pregnant. In addition, edema can make your feet wider.
